Question:
I am a Pharmacy student @Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy and was wondering
if anyone knows the exact mechanism for the interaction of yohimbine and
red wine.
Answer:
Yohimbine is primarily an alpha-2 adrenergic BLOCKER. According
to "Facts and Comparisons," its effects should be to lower blood
pressure. However no studies exist to quantify this and some reports
indicate that it may increase blood pressure. My own anecdotal
experience in two patients showed increased BP, tachycardia, skin
flushing and a helluva headache. Both decided it wasn't worth it!
